Examinations

Driver examinations for a Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 driver's licence and school bus or heavy trailer endorsement include:

  • knowledge exams
  • vision test
  • road test
  • trip inspection
  • coupling and uncoupling (Class 1)

The examination of drivers for an air brake endorsement includes:

The vision test is included as part of your knowledge exam appointment.

Scheduling:

  • included with your knowledge exams and held at a driver exam office.

Road tests

During the road test, you will be required to drive the vehicle in traffic. You will be judged on your ability to handle the vehicle safely and perform all normal driving tasks correctly, including manoeuvers such as a highway "turn-about" (three-point turn).

For a Class 1 licence, you will also be required to demonstrate other backing manouevers, such as offset backing and alley dock backing as well as demonstrate how to couple and uncouple a trailer.

If you take a road test for a Class 1, 2 or 3 driver's licence or S Endorsement (bus with a seating capacity over 24 adult passengers) in a vehicle equipped with a standard transmission you must, at one point during the test, demonstrate proper use of the clutch while shifting up and down through all the gears. On 13- or 18-speed transmissions you must split the top range.

You are required to provide the proper class of vehicle for the test. For a Class 1 road test, you must bring a three-axle power unit and a minimum 48 ft. trailer. You must be accompanied to the testing site by a driver licensed to drive the class of vehicle being used. Completion of Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is required before scheduling your Class 1 road test. The training school you completed your training with will update your SGI customer file for you.

Scheduling:

  • Pay for your test at a motor licence issuer and call 1-844-TLK-2SGI (1-844-855-2744) to book, or
  • Call 1-844-TLK-2SGI (1-844-855-2744) to book and pay by credit card.

Note: If you do not cancel your appointment and fail to show up, you will be required to pay for your re-scheduled appointment.

Road tests will be refused if:

  • The vehicle is displaying a dangerous goods placard.
  • You do not possess an appropriate driver's licence.
  • The vehicle is unsafe or not equipped in accordance with legislation - for example: operational signals, horn, speedometer and brake lights; or defective braking system (including air), muffler or windshield wipers (when raining).
  • The unit doesn't have a safety inspection decal as required by regulations.
  • The vehicle's passenger compartment is unclean or does not have a standard manufacturer's seat for the examiner.
  • The vehicle is not of the applicable class.
  • Your vision or medical fitness does not meet required standards.
  • The weight of the unit(s) towed behind a truck is under 4,600 kg (10,141 lb.) (heavy trailer tests).
  • The applicable inspection schedule is not present, and the trip inspection report is not completed as per the regulations.

Restrictions

A driver's licence may be restricted when road tests are taken in certain vehicles. For example:

For example: Drivers who are tested for a Class 1, 2 or 3 licence or S Endorsement in a vehicle equipped with an automatic or electronic shift transmission may be restricted to automatic or electronic shift transmission vehicles in those classes.

Other restrictions may apply.

Trip inspections

You have to do a trip inspection to show your vehicle safety knowledge and check the equipment’s operation and condition. For Classes 2, 3 and 4, you’re responsible to point out and name the item or equipment inspected without any help (see page 66.) For the Class 1 trip inspection, you’ll be asked to check the proper operation and condition of a randomized block of components, list the defects and describe what action you’d take. Both this and the road test are done in a vehicle that you provide (someone licensed to drive that vehicle class can drive it there for you or you can come with a supervising driver).

Scheduling:

  • included with your scheduled road test and held at a driver exam office
A video series on how to perform a Class 4 trip inspection is available on the SGI website at Upgrade to commercial licence page.
